The contributions of Medgar Evers to the Civil Rights movement must not be minimized. The Washington Post article, however, errs in suggesting that Mr. Evers was the first martyred civil rights leader. A better candidate for such an unfortunate designation would be Harry T. Moore and Harriette V. Moore, husband and wife, who died when their home in Mims, Florida was bombed at Christmas, 1951.

The home has been restored and is maintained as a museum in their honor: http://www.nbbd.com/godo/moore/

Nobody was ever charged in the murders of Mr. and Mrs. Moore.
