What’s behind the trend in dystopian fiction for kids?

This New Yorker article examines the boom in young adult dystopian fiction.  It’s a good article, but honestly, if you have teen-agers (as I do), it’s not a surprise. Kids have long been fascinated with horror fiction and novels, while not necessarily dystopian, they do imagine worlds where things have gone terribly wrong.  Kids are fascinated with these genres because they create imaginary worlds where characters are not in control of their environments, probably not to different from how many adolescents feel about their place in the world.
