Immigration and the GOP

Immigration has not been in foreground of the news lately.  People are worried about jobs, the economy, and the GOP presidential campaign.  Then this week Newt Gingrich decided to make a bold statement.  I gotta hand it to the man, he’s nothing if not a show boat.

Basically, Gingrich made the otherwise reasonable statement that immigrants who have lived lawfully in the U.S. for decades should — gasp — be allowed to stay.  Here is a video of his statement.

I have to admit, I think Gingrich is not the right man for the job, but I think it’s good to get the immigration conversation started again.

For the second time today I find myself in agreement with a prominent Republcan on immigration. Probably won’t happen again anytime soon.

Any politician who advocates expelling those here illegally is simply posturing.

Jesus spoke of “the least of these (Matthew 25:40). The folks who entered the United States not complying with immigration regulations typically swept floors, cleaned toilets, made sandwiches, etc. Perhaps those in the religious right allied with the GOP will start reading their Bibles again and realize that attacking those on the margins of society would not please the Son of Man. Wouldn’t please him at all.
